Night and Day
Duration 11:00
Night and Day, for accordion and bass clarinet, was written in the late summer of 1992 at the request of Duo Novair, to whom it was dedicated. The inspiration came at the Darmstadter Ferienkurse in 1992, where JacobTV was composer in residence. For nearly 3 weeks he used to traverse the city twice a day by tram: in the morning and at night. After hearing so much complex music at the festival, he decided to go for simplicity. Night, the slow movement, combines crossfades of 4ths and 5ths intervals, exploring the low registers of the instruments. The fast movement, Day, is like a dance, based on dominant and sub-dominant out of which melodies and rhythms appear. This dialogue eventually dissolves back in to the sonority of the beginning.
