13 in 12, for clarinet solo, 3 flutes, vibes and double bass, was composed in 1977 and performed May 7 1983 by Pierre Lafay with an ensemble conducted by John Damsma, as part of the chamber music project Nieuwe Voorschriften at the Groningen Oosterpoort. 13 in 12 is a parody on dodecaphony, or twelve tone music. 13 in 12 is Dutch, meaning ‘a dozen a dime’. In the solo part, there is a 13th note, a multiphonic. What to do with it?
